The Sound Inn Audio logical Department is formed by a professional team whose duties include locating the site of lesion, assessing and monitoring the status of client's auditory system, tinnitus counseling, audiology counseling such as information provision and support, making recommendations and referrals and assisting clients to develop appropriate strategies to enhance communication.
Nobody is ever too young for a hearing test. A hearing loss, if gone untreated, may result in speech defects, communication, learning and behavioral problems. Sound Inn provides hearing assessment services to all age groups including infants, toddlers and young children with autism, behavioral problems, speech delay and handicaps.

Otoacoustic Emissions Test (OAE)
looks at the mechanical responses of the outer hair cells of the cochlea. It helps to confirm the site of lesion and the presence of a mechanism required for normal functioning of the hearing  process. The test can be applied to all age groups including newborns and malingerers. It is non-invasive and can be undertaken even whilst the subject is asleep.
An effective hearing aid fitting programme serves to bring the gift of enhanced hearing to the hearing impaired person. A pair of optimally-fitted hearing aids functions to improve client's speech communication ability and ease communication with their family and friends.

"Hearing tests are the primary means of determining the type of hearing loss. Several tests may be performed to discover the nature of a hearing difficulty. The test results help determine the treatment options available to patients with hearing impairment or balance and dizziness problems.However accurate diagnosis and cause of deafness require a thorough history and physical examination. Several diagnostic evaluations are available at the Sound Inn. Tests are done based on the patient's needs."

Pure tone audiometry (PTA):
This technique evaluates both bone conduction and air conduction and determines the degree of hearing impairment. The audiometer presents a series of tones (measured in decibels) at frequencies (measured in Hz) from 250 Hz to 10,000 Hz. The patient wears headphones through which these tones are presented. Both air and bone conduction thresholds are measured. The results are plotted in a graphic form called as an audiogram.
Speech audiometry:
This type of audiometry evaluates the patient’s ability to hear and understand the spoken word. The patient is presented with ten familiar two-syllable words recognized primarily by their vowel sounds. The sound intensity required for the patient to correctly repeat 50% of these words is called the speech reception threshold (SRT).
Speech discrimination test (SDT)
Determines comprehension of speech rather than loudness and helps detect abnormalities of the inner ear and the hearing nerve. Even a small lesion of the hearing nerve may impair the ability to understand speech. The SD scores above 90% are normal, and the score should be close to 100% with conductive hearing loss. SD in small tumors of the hearing nerve is consistently low. Slight to moderate hearing loss with severely depressed SD scores should raise suspicion of hearing nerve tumors.
Impedance audiometry
This test has three components - Tympanometry, Acoustic Reflex Threshold, Reflex decay.
Tympanometery assesses the operational status of the middle ear, which consists of the eardrum and three small bones that connect the eardrum to the inner ear. Middle-ear blockaes or malfunctions often can be treated medically or surgically.
Acoustic Reflex test (ART)
ART measures the normal bilateral contraction of the stapedius and tensor tympani muscles (muscles in the middle ear) in response to loud acoustic stimuli. These movements stiffen the middle ear system, thus affecting impedance of the middle ear and compliance of the ear drum. The change in impedance is measured with an impedance audiometer. The AR is normally elicited by sound intensities from 70 to 100 dB above the hearing threshold. Absence of reflex suggests lesions of the hearing nerve, sensorineural hearing loss, or Otosclerosis.
Stapedial reflexes and reflex decay:
This evaluates the auditory nerve's ability to transmit hearing signals to the brain. Blockages along this pathway would indicate the need for further medical consultation.

Auditory brain-stem response (ABR) testing:
Electrical nerve impulses that carry the sound from the inner ear to the brain are measured.

Electrodes are placed in the ear canal and on the head, and short clicking sounds are turned on. The audiologist can determine how sound is transmitted to the brain and if there are any blockages or interruptions to the nerve impulses.

TEN (threshold equalizing noise) test:
This test determines if a patient has any pitch regions in the inner ear that no longer have the ability to respond to sound stimulation, thus creating "dead zones."
Information about any nonfunctional regions of the inner ear can be helpful to determine how to adjust hearing aids and how much help they can provide.
SIN (sentence-in-noise) test:
SIN evaluates the ability to understand conversational speech in noise and compare one's performance to that of normal listeners. Helps determine possible benefit from hearing aid use in noisy situations and what type of hearing aid circuitry might be needed.
Otoacoustic emissions:
This test evaluates the functioning of the outer hair cells in the inner ear. Otoacoustic emissions are acoustic signals generated by the normal inner ear, either in the absence of acoustic stimulation (spontaneous emissions) or in response to acoustic stimulation (acoustically-evoked emissions). These emissions can be measured by placing a microphone in the opening of the ear canal and analyzing the signals obtained.
